Three Words That Are Key to Online Marketing Success by Linda M. McLellan

There are many systems, methods and techniques that can potentially help you achieve some level of success as an online marketer.

There is a definite wrong way. That is to rush into it without really understanding the business, and what it is going to take to make it work for you. If you don't educate yourself, you will end up in the proverbial 95% category of marketing affiliates that never make a dime online. Think about that number. It is huge.

However, if you approach online marketing as a genuine business that requires planning and effort, then you have a good chance of succeeding. If you are seriously considering online marketing as a way to make more money, then the first logical step is to educate yourself. I cannot emphasise the importance of taking the time to learn everything you can about affiliate and online marketing, before you take the leap. You are going to come up against new acronyms and new business methods and techniques that are associated specifically with starting up, and managing an online business. There are plenty of ways to get educated including, internet research, ebooks, CD and online courses. Internet marketing forums are also another great source of information. If you learn everything you can about internet marketing before you decide to launch into it, you will be miles ahead of most new people who jump into this business and frequently fail. They say ignorance is bliss, but certainly not in this case.

There are three significant words to keep in mind when you decide to enter the business of online marketing.

The first word is patience.

You need to understand that it takes time to make any business work, and there is a learning curve that you need to go through to really understand internet marketing. Steer clear of those marketing ads that promote products with claims of instant wealth with push button products. It's a recipe for failure and quickly racking up your credit card. Research online and marketing thoroughly and sign up for an online marketing course. Find a real mentor that can help you and read forums, ask questions, read articles. Be patient and take the time to learn. That will lead to a solid foundation for you to gradually build your business.

Once you decide that you are going to try your hand at internet marketing and you believe that you understand the process and methods, the next word that will become important to you, is persistence. There are a lot of different ways to make money online and you need to find the one that is right for you. You can promote other people's products, create your own products, join affiliate programs or open an online store. There are literally 100's of ways to make money online. So choose the one or two ways that appeal to you the most, and start experimenting with different methods, campaigns and keywords. Don't give up if you aren't successful in your first try. No one achieves success right off and there is no magic shortcut to instant wealth. Be persistent. It always pays off. Just ask any millionaire.

So now you are educated and knowledgeable about the world of internet marketing. You have looked into various ways to make money online, and have chosen the best systems that personally suit you. You have tested out a few reputable affiliate programs and products and now have some understanding of marketing and some of the methods you want to apply.

If you understand marketing, you know that it means promotion and advertising. Promotion is the third key word that will help pave the way to success for you and your online business. Promotion means getting the word out about you and your website business to everyone you can. There are so many ways to promote your business including; banner ads, email campaigns (you need a list), joining social networking sites, and submitting articles on articles sites like this one. I have only documented a few promotion channels here, but I think you get the picture.

Employ three key words, patience, persistence and promotion into your online marketing business, and it is only a matter of time before you can add two more words, success and money.

Discover The Latest Trends In Internet Marketing By Tania B Parsons

All businesses need to follow the latest trends of the market and the customer behavior to exist and flourish. Internet Marketing is a great way to invest small budget in order to acquire maximum return for your business. You need to keep in mind that consumer analysis and smart timing is most important when you are investing in internet marketing. Generally, proper and effective internet marketing depends on the volume of traffic that has seen your messages and got lured to your online presence for a successful purchase.

The following list will guide you through the latest Internet Marketing trends that can help you to market your products or services effectively. They are:

Social Network Marketing - Social network marketing procedures are especially good for major brands, therefore you need to survey customers to identify how many of them consider the network to be a major form of communication. The existing customers need to be surveyed as they will be the ones who will respond to your offers posted on social networks than the strangers.

The most popular networking sites are Twitter, Facebook and MySpace. In these social networking sites, you only need to sign-up and post information regarding yourself and your services or products. By this method, you can open the way to your websites and business to millions of people. When posting articles on your website, make sure that there is adequate number of keywords that aptly describes your services or products. The consistent use of keywords will also lead to the improvement of your site's ranking.

Online Video - With faster internet connections, viewing videos online is no more a barrier now. With online video, you can achieve innumerable buying emotions and impressive brand moments. It is memorable, interactive, inexpensive, widely accessible and highly shareable. Through online outlets, the online video has become beneficial for small businesses also. It is reported that various investments are happening that are likely to create even more low-priced opportunities for small businesses. However, you need to keep in mind that the website should not be bereft of text as text can be quickly scanned for required information.

Podcasting and Online Radio - Online radio is considered to be a growing trend presently. The online radio broadcasters are making a whole-hearted attempt to locate and attract potential audiences. In case of podcasting, iTunes have been the leader for a long time. It is very important for internet broadcasters to make their media more attractive, engaging, sharable and traceable to attract lots of traffic.

Coupons, Savings and Discounts - Though these cannot be exactly considered to be an internet marketing trend, it is of significance due to the present economy. The scenario of 2009 has made customers accustomed to shopping products that offer great deals and discounts. Since resetting the customers' expectations is not an easy task, you need to swap discounts with special privileges such as free upgrades, loyalty discounts and more.

In comparison to technology and marketers, customers move slowly. Therefore, you should not quickly jump on new bandwagons; rather you should focus on attracting repeat business, solving problems and intensifying your relationship with the customers. Following the trends mentioned above will likely enrich and expand your business by bringing in more visitors.

States, business watch for effects of Illinois tax By Ben Klayman

Now that Illinois has passeda law to collect sales taxes on items bought over the Internet, other states and big retailers are watching for the impact onother parts of the country.

DETROIT, March 17 (Reuters) - Now that Illinois has passed a law to collect sales taxes on items bought over the Internet, other states and big retailers are watching for the impact on other parts of the country.

"There seems to be a flurry of these bills all at once. One reason is there's a lot of changeover in legislatures around the country," said Rebecca Madigan, executive director of the Performance Marketing Association, a trade group representing online merchants and affiliates.

"The big-box guys are really putting a lot of money behind this and stirring things up through a lot of fear, uncertainty and doubt," she said.

"Big-box" refers to giant national chains that sell out of large stores and say sales tax laws give online retailers an unfair advantage.

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled a company only has to collect sales taxes where it has a physical presence, saying that states' divergent tax systems are too complicated to require businesses to comply with them all.

That allows Amazon.com Inc and other on-line retailers to skirt collecting taxes in states where they do not have headquarters or a corporate presence. In turn, shoppers pay less on-line than at stores in many states.

For more than a decade, the Streamlined Sales Tax Governing Board has sought to change this by having all states agree to simplify their tax administration and make their tax codes uniform. According to the board, made up mostly of state legislators, 24 states have passed legislation conforming to the agreement and nine states are considering bills.

Now, though, some states are taking the more direct tack of requiring retailers to collect the taxes.

Last week, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed the "Mainstreet Fairness Act" to target those online retailers like Amazon that have affiliates in the state. He said the law will create fairer competition and help Illinois, a state hit hard by the 2007-2009 economic recession, build up revenue.

Illinois estimates it loses at least $153 million in sales tax revenue annually due to retailers not collecting the tax.

Texas is considering taxing online sales and California, which already passed legislation that was vetoed, is considering another bill.

"If Illinois and California and Texas move forward on this, then you will see a number of states take similar action," said Jason Brewer, a spokesman for the Retail Industry Leaders Association, which represents such large brick-and-mortar retailers as Home Depot Inc .

"You can't continue to operate with an unlevel playing field given the way online sales are growing," he said.

In 2010, total "e-commerce sales" were $165.4 billion, 14.8 percent higher than 2009, according to government data. Still, they only accounted for 4.2 percent of all retail sales.

The sales tax revenues likely will not make up for states' huge budget gaps caused by the housing market downturn, financial crisis and recession -- they are projecting shortfalls totaling more than $100 billion next fiscal year.

California, for example, says if its sales tax legislation were to pass, state and local revenue would increase $152 million this year and $317 million next year. The state's budget deficit through the middle of 2012 is projected at more than $25 billion, which means its Internet sales tax revenues would represent less than 2 percent of its yawning gap.

But Internet retailers say they could cause states real fiscal pain by hitting income tax revenues. Income taxes are second only to federal aid as a source of state revenue, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Amazon and Overstock.com Inc have threatened to cut off affiliates who work with them in states with Internet tax laws.

"For us, there's really no side effect, but for the states, they lose the income tax," Overstock President Jonathan Johnson told Reuters.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc last week invited Illinois online businesses to join its affiliate network.

California's Board of Equalization, which runs the state's tax program, said the state's bill "would have an adverse impact" on employment and its personal income tax. It could not forecast how much, though, the state stands to lose.

For Rob Babek, a partner at independent accounting and advisory firm Marcum LLP in Los Angeles, asking Amazon to collect taxes would create an administrative nightmare because the company has "thousands and thousands of transactions everyday all over the country."

"The only fair way to handle this would be to simply impose a federal sales tax on all Internet sales and then the federal government would distribute such taxes to each state," he said.
